What Mangal dosha means
Mangal dosha, or being Manglik, is a traditional marriage-matching factor based on where Mars sits in the birth chart. Mars stands for energy, drive and directness. When it occupies certain houses connected with home, partnership and shared life, tradition says those qualities need care in a marriage.
The common rule counts Mars from the Lagna (ascendant) and flags houses 1, 4, 7, 8 and 12. Some South Indian schools add the 2nd house. Many astrologers also count from the Moon and from Venus, and give the dosha more weight when it appears from more than one of them.
Why so many charts are Manglik
Five houses out of twelve is a lot. On the Lagna rule alone, roughly four people in ten have Mars in one of them, and counting from the Moon as well raises the share further. That is why a bare yes or no is not much use, and why the classical texts also list cancellations.
Cancellations (dosha bhanga)
Commonly cited cancellations include Mars in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio) or exalted (Capricorn), Mars aspected by or joined with Jupiter, and certain sign-and-house combinations that particular schools accept. Traditionally, when both partners are Manglik, the dosha is considered balanced. The calculator lists each rule it checked, so you can see why the result came out the way it did.
How to read your result
Treat Mangal dosha as one input among many. It is not a prediction of harm to a spouse. If it matters to your family, compare both charts together on the kundli matching page, and see the whole chart in your free Janam Kundli.
Frequently asked questions
Can Mangal dosha be checked without a birth time?
Partly. Mars usually stays in one sign all day, so the count from the Moon and Venus is reliable for most dates. The count from the Lagna needs the birth time, because the Lagna changes about every two hours.
Does Mangal dosha end at 28?
Some families hold that the dosha weakens after 28, the age traditionally linked with Mars's maturity. It is a belief, not a rule found in every classical text, so the calculator reports the chart as it is.
Should a Manglik marry only a Manglik?
Tradition prefers it, but it is not required. Cancellations in either chart, and the match as a whole, matter more than the label.
Which school does the calculator use?
By default it counts houses 1, 4, 7, 8 and 12 from both the Lagna and the Moon. The report also shows the result by the other schools.
