What Sade Sati is
Sade Sati (“seven and a half”) is the period when Saturn moves through the sign before your Moon sign, your Moon sign itself, and the sign after it. Saturn spends about two and a half years in each sign, so the three phases together last about seven and a half years. Saturn takes roughly 29.5 years to go round the zodiac, so Sade Sati comes about once every 30 years: two or three times in most lifetimes.
The three phases are traditionally called rising (Saturn in the 12th from the Moon), peak (Saturn over the Moon sign) and setting (Saturn in the 2nd from the Moon).
Shani Dhaiya
Dhaiya (“two and a half”) is the shorter period when Saturn transits the 4th or the 8th sign from your Moon. The 4th is also called Kantaka Shani or small Panoti, and the 8th Ashtama Shani. Each lasts about two and a half years.
Why exact dates need an ephemeris
Saturn does not move at a steady pace. Every year it turns retrograde for about four and a half months, and around a sign change it can step back into the previous sign before moving on. A phase can therefore start, pause and resume. The calculator reads Saturn's real positions from Swiss Ephemeris (Lahiri ayanamsa), so it lists every entry and exit rather than an average.
What it means in practice
Sade Sati has a heavy reputation, but Saturn's transit is about responsibility, steady work and patience, and many people make solid progress during it. How it feels depends on Saturn's place in your own chart, its strength and the dasha running at the time. Your free Janam Kundli shows all three.
Frequently asked questions
Is Sade Sati counted from the Moon sign or the Sun sign?
From the Moon sign (rashi) in the sidereal zodiac used in Vedic astrology. Your Western Sun sign plays no part.
Do I need my birth time?
Usually not. The Moon stays in one sign for about two and a half days, so the date is normally enough. If the Moon changed sign on the day you were born, the time decides which sign it was in.
Is Sade Sati always bad?
No. It is a period of tests and effort, and outcomes vary widely from person to person. The calculator gives dates, not predictions.
Do I need remedies?
No. Traditional practices such as Saturday prayers or charity are personal choices. Nothing on this site has to be bought.
